THREE DECEMBERS, an opera in two acts by Jake Heggie & Gene Scheer, based on an original play by Terrence McNally. Live recording from Houston Grand Opera (2008).

Frederica von Stade (Madeline), Kristin Clayton (Bea), Keith Phares (Charlie). Patrick Summers conducts members of the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra.

The great Frederica von Stade sings "the role of a lifetime" (Houston Chronicle) as Broadway star Madeline Mitchell in the latest lyric drama by Heggie & Scheer, based on a play by Terrence McNally. Madeline's children are sung by soprano Kristin Clayton (Bea) and baritone Keith Phares (Charlie). In the story, a famous actress has become estranged from her children. Madeline has been keeping a powerful secret from them, and over three decades hidden truths are revealed as they struggle to find their identities as part of a family and in their lives.

Baritone Morgan Smith (Manfred) and veteran baritone Julian Patrick (Gad) are joined by a quintet of extraordinary instrumentalists for this theatrical song cycle commissioned by Seattle’s Music of Remembrance (Mina Miller, artistic director).

Librettist Gene Scheer based his text on true stories told in the documentary film Paragraph 175 and the journal of Manfred Lewin, from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC.

perform some of Jake's recent works, including the complete cycles Statuesque and The Deepest Desire, plus selections from Winter Roses and The Starry Night.

 

Also featured are performances by Eugenia Zukerman, flute; Carey Bell, clarinet; David Henderson, saxophone; Dawn Harms, violin; Emil Miland, cello; Richard Worn, bass; and Jake Heggie, piano.

 

All proceeds benefit Classical Action to support AIDS services, awareness and education.
